2009_IC_PBS_foodlistcover-250Millions of people suffer with Interstitial Cystitis / Painful Bladder Syndrome often referred to as IC/PBS. For most, diet is the first line of defense to manage Interstitial Cystitis symptoms and help relieve bladder pain.

The most widely supported diet guidlines for people suffering with IC/PBS is the Interstitial Cystitis Diet (IC Diet) which is based on emerging research as well as patient interviews.  The new 2009 IC/PBS Food List is a comprehensive list of foods that are bladder friendly, foods that may be worth trying when you are starting to improve and foods to approach with caution if you are struggling with symptoms.

About Our Interstitial Cystitis Friendly Recipes

You will notice that all the recipes on our site have an IC Diet Scale rating.

  1. Bladder Friendly: consists of ingredients that are well tolerated by most people with interstitial cystitis (recipes may contain ingredients in the try it list, but bladder friendly ingredient substitutions are offered).
  2. Try It: contains ingredients that may be worth trying when your interstitial cystitis symptoms are starting to improve.
  3. Caution: proceed with caution if you are struggling with symptoms.

The rating assigned to each recipe is based off of the 2009 IC/PBS Food List. As you browse our recipes, it is important to consider that each individual with IC/PBS is different and food sensitivities do vary from person to person.  What might be safe for one person may trigger a five alarm bladder flare in another.   Additionally, an individuals sensitivities can vary greatly depending on whether they are in a flare or not.  That's why our mantra here at Healthy IC Recipes is when in doubt, leave it out.

2009 IC/PBS Food List of Bladder & Prostate Friendly Foods

The Interstitial Cystitis / Panful Bladder Syndrome Food List is published by the Interstitial Cystitis Network (IC-Network) and was developed by Jill Osborne MA (President & Founder - IC Network), Barbara Gordon RD (Executive Director - ICA), Bev Laumann (author of A Taste of The Good Life: A Cookbook For an IC Diet), Julie Beyer RD (author of the Confident Choices diet books) and Barbara Shorter RD (Long Island University).
